Maa Movie Review: Kajol Returns With a Gripping Performance in This Bone-Chilling Supernatural Horror

Maa Movie Review: Director Vishal Furia returns with Maa, a gripping thriller that combines folklore, mythology, and the sheer strength of a mother's love. Set against the dark background of rural Bengal, the film investigates how a woman defies fate, curses, and even generations of patriarchy in order to protect her child. Maa skillfully combines lesser-known myths with a powerful social critique on patriarchal norms that are still prevalent today. The chilling backdrop, flawless visuals, and strong background score add to the film’s uncanny suspense. The plot is not forced or dragged unnecessarily, and will keep you on the edge of your seat till the end.

Maa Movie Plot

The story begins in Chandrapur, where twins are born during the Kaalo Puja. Shubhankar (Indraneil Sengupta) is celebrated, but the girl is killed. Forty years later, Shubhankar’s daughter Shweta expresses a wish to return to her ancestral village. His return to Chandrapur sets off a series of tragic events linked to the legendary Daiyetya curse. When Shubhankar succumbs to illness, his wife, Ambika (Kajol), returns to the village—only to face a horrific legacy. What follows is a terrifying combination of superstition and maternal strength.

Kajol Returns as a Furious Mother

Kajol gives a powerful portrayal as a tough and emotionally charged mother with incredible depth. Her screen presence is captivating, and she carries the emotional weight of the film well.  Ronit Bose Roy impresses as the commanding Sarpanch, while Indraneil Sengupta, despite his limited screen time, leaves an impression. Vishal Furia, the director, has once again demonstrated his expertise at weaving Indian-themed thriller plots.

Overall Review

Maa is a bold criticism of society norms as well as a celebration of the power of mother love.  The movie deserves a 3.5 rating for its compelling performances and well-crafted narrative, which provide a thought-provoking and emotionally charged cinematic experience. The film, directed by Vishal Furia and produced by Ajay Devgn and Jyoti Deshpande, stars Kajol, Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta, Kherin Sharma, Surjyasikha Das, Jitin Gulati, and Dibyendu Bhattacharya.
