UPS-NPS Deadline: The Central Government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has extended the deadline for opting for the National Pension Scheme (NPS) and the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) by three months. The earlier deadline of June 30th has been extended to September 30th, 2025, as the new date for choosing the UPS option. Current and former employees, as well as the spouses of retired personnel who have passed away, are eligible beneficiaries. According to the NPS rule, workers are divided into three categories: those hired after April 1, 2025, those who retired or took voluntary retirement on or before March 31, 2025, and those who were working until that date.
The UPS was first established during British rule with the intention of providing financial incentives to individuals who had worked for the government for at least ten years. The plan uses the average wage for six months plus inflation adjustments to determine lump sum pension benefits. Legal spouses of deceased pensioners are likewise protected, and beneficiaries are entitled to a monthly pension top-up. Those who qualify can apply for UPS online or offline. While offline candidates must download the form from the NPS portal and deliver it to their respective Drawing and Disbursing Officer (DDO), online applicants can fill it out and submit it through the designated website.
