Health & Lifestyle: Know Common Cancer Myths and the Truth Behind Them

25 Jul, 2025

Health & Lifestyle: There is a lot of misinformation about cancer, and many myths are mistaken for facts. Common myths include the idea that underwire bras induce cancer due to a purported lymphatic blockage, or that microwaving food causes cancer. However, no scientific data supports these statements. Microwaves do not emit ionising radiation, such as ultraviolet rays or X-rays, which are known to raise cancer risk. Similarly, while reheating stale food or recycling frying oil can produce some chemicals, there is no conclusive evidence that these methods cause cancer. However, eating freshly prepared meals is often regarded as a healthier option. Myths like black drinks and cell phones causing cancer also lack scientific support.

Common Cancer Myths

It is important to separate misconceptions from evidence-based concerns. For example, cervical cancer is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), an infection that may be prevented with basic hygiene, which has contributed to a dramatic decrease in its occurrence in India over the last decade. Furthermore, geographic variations influence cancer prevalence. Gallbladder cancer, for example, is quite common in women living along the Ganges in Bihar, possibly due to chemical exposure. In cold places, such as Srinagar, regular eating of highly hot dishes has been related to an increased risk of food pipe and stomach cancer. These findings emphasise the impact of environmental and lifestyle variables on cancer development.
