Home Remedies: Colds and coughs are common ailments, especially during seasonal changes, and are frequently caused by viral or bacterial infections, allergies, or a weakened immune system. Several scientifically supported home treatments provide significant relief without causing unwanted effects. One of the most effective is a honey and ginger mix. Ginger contains gingerol and shogaol, both of which have powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities that aid in the treatment of throat irritation and infections. Honey’s antiviral and antibacterial properties soothe the throat and regulate mucus production. A mixture of one teaspoon of honey and one teaspoon of ginger juice, taken two to three times a day, can provide immediate relief.  Licking a teaspoon of honey can help soothe a sore throat. Turmeric milk is another famous home treatment. Turmeric includes curcumin, a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory molecule that boosts immunity and reduces inflammation. When combined with warm milk, it loosens mucus and soothes the throat. Adding a pinch of black pepper and honey can boost its effectiveness. To achieve the best benefits, drink this cocktail before bedtime.

Other effective treatments include tulsi and clove tea, steam inhalation, and saltwater gargles.  Tulsi (holy basil) contains antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory qualities, whilst cloves include eugenol, which is a natural pain reliever and antioxidant. Five to six tulsi leaves and two cloves are boiled in water, then strained and mixed with honey to make a throat and respiratory tract clearing tea. Steam inhalation is especially good at loosening and removing mucus from the sinuses and airways. Adding basil, ginger, or a menthol-based rub (such as Vicks) to the steam increases its advantages. Cover your head with a towel and inhale the steam for 5-10 minutes, twice a day. Apart from this, gargling with warm salt water can reduce throat inflammation and destroy harmful microorganisms because salt has antiseptic characteristics.  Gargle with one teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water two or three times per day. A pinch of turmeric can bring extra relief.
